Top names from the Italian sporting media world made their way to Sicily’s Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa to compete in the Campionato Associazione Italiana Giornalisti Golfisti – the Italian Golf Journalists Association Championship.

In total, 49 respected journalists from outlets as diverse as Corriere dello Sport, Corriere della Sera, RAI, La Repubblica and Eurosport competed against each other for the prestigious title – and, maybe more importantly, bragging rights. The event was played out over two rounds of golf on Donnafugata’s renowned Parkland – host to the 2011 Sicilian Open – and Links courses.

Ultimately it was a golf journalist, Barbara Zonchello, from Il Mondo del Golf, who took the top prize with the best gross score, while Ruggiero Palombo (Gazzetta dello Sport) won the trophy for the best full-time journalist and Marco Palomba (Agapantos) claimed the prize for best nett score in the category for contributing writers.

Competitors enjoyed an overnight stay at the award-winning luxury resort, which lies near to the town of Ragusa, the cradle of Sicilian Baroque architecture, and enjoyed local delicacies and a number of Sicilian wines.

Guy Roberts, golf director at Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa, said: “There were some well-known names treading the fairways in the competition and it was a delight to welcome so many members of the Italian media to our resort. There was some excellent golf on show, but more importantly, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves on and off the course.”

Fulvio Golob, director of Il Mondo del Golf magazine and vice-president of the Italian Association of Golfing Journalists, said: “”I can speak for every one of the journalists and their companions when I say that our group found the resort to be really beautiful, very functional and charming and with  tremendous attention to detail in every area.

“Both golf courses are absolutely magnificent and help make Donnafugata a flagship within the Italian golf tourism segment.”

Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa, voted the best golf resort in Italy in 2012 by Condé Nast Traveller and one of four Italian new entries in the second edition of the Rolex World’s Top 1000 Golf Courses , has two 18-hole championship golf courses – the Gary Player-designed Parkland and the Links course designed by Franco Piras.

In addition, the luxurious venue boasts a spa and wellness centre, swimming-pools and three restaurants, and is the ideal destination for a holiday focused on sport and relaxation in a truly exclusive setting.
