Agrispread wins Enterprise Award

An agricultural machinery manufacturer, run by three young brothers and their father from Mayo, has clinched the overall title at the County and City Enterprise Boards’ National Enterprise Awards in Dublin Castle (held on November 24th).

Agrispread in Ballyhaunis, which is supported by Mayo County Enterprise Board, manufactures and exports agricultural machinery, such as lime and fertiliser spreaders, slurry tankers and bale feeders. Run by David, Dermot and Marcus Murphy, the micro-enterprise currently exports 85% of its products to seven countries, including Poland, Holland, Germany, the UK and South Africa.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Small Business, Mr. John Perry, T.D., at the 15th Annual National Enterprise Awards at Dublin Castle, which is organised by the County and City Enterprise Boards every year to celebrate the achievements of Ireland’s micro-enterprises.

Three other award categories were also presented : the Best Start-Up Business Award went to FleetConnect in Fingal, which provides wireless communication products to the transport sector in Ireland and the UK; the Best Exporting Business Award went to Softouch Technologies in Wexford, which specialises in off-the-shelf database management systems; the Best Innovation in Product Development Award went to Drombeg Premium Irish Spirit in West Cork, which produces and markets a liqueur for sale both nationally and internationally.

Running Gear Ltd, trading as Agrispread, was set-up up by Murphy family in 2007 and currently employs ten people on a full-time basis with plans to grow the workforce to twenty-five by the end of 2012.

The other four finalists at the 2011 National Enterprise Awards were: Aine’s Handmade Chocolates from Cavan, Soltec Ireland Ltd from Westmeath, Sendmode.com from Donegal and Action Point Innovation from County Limerick.

“The quality of the eight finalists this year demonstrates that small business is truly alive in Ireland and equipped to challenge the hostile winds of the current economic climate. A successful manufacturing business in the West of Ireland that can export 85% of its production, speaks volumes for the capacity of Irish entrepreneurs,” said Vincent Reynolds from the County and City Enterprise Boards.

The 35 County and City Enterprise Boards, funded by the Department of  Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, collectively supported over 25,000 small businesses in Ireland last year, working with companies with ten or fewer employees.
