USS Mohawk Underwater Exhibition

USS Mohawk Art

USS Mohawk Art

The sunken USS Mohawk has opened its first underwater dive accessible only exhibition, giving diving enthusiasts an exciting dimension to their next dive. The USS Mohawk is a 165-foot World War II cutter, which was sunk in July 2012 about 28 nautical miles off Sanibel Island in the Gulf of Mexico.

The exhibition will run until 14 September 2013 and has been created by Austrian photographer Andreas Franke with the theme of ‘Sinking World’. The exhibition features photos of the sunken USS Mohawk with models in period clothing superimposed onto the photos. The clothing and designs are based on the lives of the sailors who would have been aboard the Mohawk in WWII. The poster size photos are sealed between sheets of Plexiglas, placed in stainless steel frames and attached to the ship with magnets. Divers will be able to see the exhibition in the destinations’ peak dive season, with 50-70 feet of visibility in the water.

Franke has done similar ‘Sinking World’ projects in other sites across the world including the 523-foot former U.S. warship Hoyt S. Vandenberg, scuttled in 2009 off Key West, and the 365-foot Greek freighter Stavronikita, scuttled in 1978 off Barbados.

Frequent dives to the USS Mohawk are available with Deans Dive Center (www.deansdivecenter.com) and prices start from £90 for the boat trip (excludes equipment). Divers must have advanced diving certification.
