Outstanding athlete, coach, administrator, mentor and friend of all at Wellington Harrier Athletic Club Graham Tattersall lost his battle with melanoma cancer and died on Thursday 16 October aged 69.<\/p>\n

Tattersall was a distance coach legend in Wellington, coaching a number of New Zealand champions and national representatives including Jonathan Wyatt, Derek Froude, Dallas McCallum, John Henwood, Tim Cornish and Philip Starr. During the early 1990\u2019s he coached the Rongotai College running squad which included Starr, Michael Tannock and Hayden Florence. The team went unbeaten in all of 1992. For the last 17 years he has coached the team at Scots College which included runners that he also coached at Wellington Harrier Athletic Club including Kieron McDonald, Nicholas Pointon, Nathan Tse, James Fletcher and Marcus Karamanolis (St Pats),<\/p>\n

Quiet and unassuming Tattersall, or as he was known as Tatts, was a no nonsense and effective coach with the Wellington Harrier Athletic Club for over 40 years. He was particularly successful with the teams from the Club at the national road relay championships with wins in the 1978, 1992, 1993 and more recently the 2012 and 2013 junior men\u2019s championship.<\/p>\n

He was appointed either a manager or coach to a number of New Zealand teams to Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World Athletic and Cross Country Championships and Ekiden Relays.<\/p>\n

\n1992 Australian Cross Country Championships Nowra NSW, team manager.
\n1992 Chiba Ekiden Relay, team manager.
\n1993 World Cross Country Championships Spain, assistant manager.
\n1996 Olympic Games Atlanta USA, coach.
\n1996 Chiba Ekiden Relay, coach.
\n1997 World Championships in Athletics Athens Greece, coach.
\n1998 Commonwealth Games Kuala Lumpur, coach.
\n1999 World Cross Country Championships Belfast Northern Ireland, manager.
\n1999 Chiba Ekiden Relay, coach.
\n2004 Olympic Games Athens Greece, coach.
\n2011 Chiba Ekiden Relay, team leader.
\n2012 Chiba Ekiden Relay, manager.
\n2013 Chiba Ekiden Relay, coach.<\/p>\n

Tattersall was a former top soccer player in the UK before turning to running. He competed with success in master events in New Zealand and at the 1999 New Zealand cross country championships he was third in the 50-54 age group. He was Athletics New Zealand acting performance director in 2005 and was a IAAF level 3 distance coach and lecturer.<\/p>\n

A memorial service to celebrate the life and achievements of Graham will be held at 2pm, Sunday 26 October at Scots College, Monorgan Road, Strathmore Park, Wellington.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
