Beijing – Croatia has become the 28th member of the European Union. It officially joined the bloc at midnight on Sunday, passing a milestone in its recovery from war.
Croatia’s accession into the EU comes just over two decades after it declared independence from federal Yugoslavia. The move triggered four years of war in which an estimated 20-thousand people died.
Some 170 foreign officials, including 15 heads of state and 13 prime ministers, attended the main ceremony in the central square of Croatia’s capital, Zagreb.
However, facing a fifth year of recession and a record 21 % unemployment, few Croatians may be in the mood to celebrate. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
