The many fundraising initiatives by House of Fraser in support of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) in recent months have lead to the formation of a new scholarship at the Institute, ‘The Tricia McCarthy Memorial Scholarship’. Over the last eighteen months House of Fraser raised an incredible €25,000 for the breast cancer charity at their Dundrum store. The Scholarship is named after Tricia McCarthy, sister of well-known beauty writer Triona McCarthy who has become a champion for NBCRI since her sister was diagnosed with the disease in 2007. University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland has become the first university worldwide to achieve the ISO 50001 standard in energy management. It is also the first public sector body in Ireland to be certified to the international standard.

Enerit ISO 50001 software was used to implement UCC’s energy management program and the University was certified to the standard in four months, a fantastic achievement. [Read more…]

SIPTU General President Jack O’Connor has strongly criticised the ESRI for proposing further cuts in the Budget. He said it was incredible that “in the same week as the Central Bank reported a 26 per cent increase in distressed mortgages over the past year and a day after the Central Statistics Office reports that the Live Register continues to rise inexorably, the Economic and Social research Institute is calling for intensification of the austerity programme beyond even the draconian provisions of the EU/ECB/IMF plan, which has already inflicted so much misery on our citizens.
