Chambers Unite In Call For Passing Bill

The Chambers of Ennis, Galway, Limerick and Shannon, which represent 1,355 members with a combined employment level of 45,700,  have today (Friday, 21 March 2014) called on the Government to prioritise the passing of the Shannon Aviation Services and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2013 to facilitate the incorporation of the new Shannon Group plc and the associated amalgamation of Shannon Development into the new entity.

“The creation, consequential empowerment, and transfer of functions to the new Shannon entity, Shannon Group plc, incorporating subsidiaries Shannon Airport Authority and a re-named Shannon Development as Shannon Commercial Enterprises is urgently awaited.  It is the final phase in the implementation of the Government decision made in December 2012 to give Shannon Airport its independence and amalgamate it with a restructured Shannon Development. The implementation of that Government decision by enacting the enabling legislation is now long overdue. The new structure needs to be formalised with speed, and not left in the current limbo with the surrounding uncertainty for the region. The Chambers are calling on the Government to prioritise this long-overdue legislation,” the Chambers’ Presidents said.

“The development of a world-class airport and cluster of aerospace enterprises in an International Aviation Services Centre will only happen when the dynamically structured entity has the power to move forward. The chairman and CEO designate of the new entity are doing everything within their power to implement their strategic and operational plans. A very positive report card on the airport’s first year as an independent airport was recently presented to Minister Varadkar, and key executive appointments have been made. The airport has clearly demonstrated its strategic intent; the Government now needs to do likewise. Without a full mandate, which the new Bill will furnish, further progress at Shannon Airport , Shannon Free Zone and the associated Shannon Development properties is being impeded, at a critical period of economic recovery,” the Presidents concluded.
