Irish NGOs Welcome Plans to Establish Independent Charities Regulator
The 50 NGOs that make up the Dóchas network today welcomed the announcement by Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Alan Shatter TD, that the long-awaited Charities Regulatory Authority will be appointed by the end of February. Commenting on the announcement, Hans Zomer, Director of Dóchas, the Irish Association of Development NGOs, said:
“We welcome the Minister’s plans to finally establish an independent Charities Regulatory Authority. This is an opportunity to strengthen the sector and reinforce the crucial role in society that the sector provides.”
Charities Act since 2009
Dóchas has been calling for a Regulator for over a decade, and for the implementation of the Charities Act since 2009.
“Our members already apply very high standards of accountability and are seen as leaders in the Irish non-profit sector. We have shown that NGOs can work to improve their own standards of transparency and corporate governance and can work together to promote self-regulation and sector-wide transparency, but regulation can only come from Government.”
