Happy Snappers at Féile Na Tuaithe

photo ireland

Don’t just go to Féile na Tuaithe this year, join in the festival by taking part in one of our free competitions and win yourself some very nice prizes. There’s a photographic angle to both, so get out your Smartphone, your SLR or your compact camera and get snapping! There are prizes for all age groups.

Traditional Dress Competition

Dress up in traditional costume, send us a photo and you could win a gift voucher for the fabulous Museum Shop. It’s free to enter and fun to do. To enter, just take a photo in front of the model thatched cottage in the Museum grounds and email it in.

The Féile na Tuaithe Traditional Clothing Competition has four categories – Best Dressed Family, and three age groups of Best Dressed Children (under 12, under 8 and under 6).

Your period costume can be anything from a stylish outfit your grandparents or great grandparents might have sported to a wedding, to day-to-day work or school day clothing. The choice is yours. The only limit is to wear something from the dates the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life represents – that’s anytime from 1850 onwards, so it leaves you with a wide choice. Take a step back into the past: it can be you, your children, your parents – or everyone. The more people that come in period costume, the more the past will come to life.

To enter, please send your photo to feilephotocomp@museum.ie by 12 noon on Friday 6th June with “traditional dress competition” in the subject line. Please include your name, address, contact information, and which category you are entering.

Photo Competition

In the weeks leading up to Féile, photographers get the chance to send in their photos representing the lovely theme, “Echoes of the Past”. This competition encourages photographers to use their creativity when interpreting the theme, as the past can be as recent as yesterday or could reach back generations. Whether it’s a landscape showing the passing of time, or a portrait capturing a distant memory, the past surrounds us in many different ways. This competition is generously sponsored by Angela Campbell of The Kodak Shop in Castlebar and has great prizes.

The “Echoes of the Past” photography competition has three categories: -Adult (over 18), Juvenile (over 12), and Children (under 12).

To enter, please send your photo to feilephotocomp@museum.ie by 12 noon on Wednesday 14th May with “Féile Photo Comp” in the subject line. Please include your name, address, contact information, and which category you are entering.

Photos entered in either competition may be shared on Facebook, Twitter on the Museum website or in promotional materials. Check out Féile na Tuaithe on Facebook and Twitter for more details.

The West’s biggest free family festival, Féile na Tuaithe, returns to the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life in Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2014. The popular festival is supported by Mayo County Council. It returns after a three year hiatus and is expected to attract up to 20,000 visitors. As in previous years, contemporary and traditional crafts will be showcased, in demonstrations, workshops and on sale. New this year are food-themed talks in the Museum Galleries and a Meet the Makers section for both food and craft producers.

All attractions, demonstrations and activities at Féile na Tuaithe are a joyful celebration of the countryside and have a direct connection with the Museum’s theme. The festival is open from 12 noon each day.
