The weather outside is frightful

UK Winter 2013

UK Winter 2013

The United Kingdom has been in the icy grip of winter since the early hours of Monday morning when Jack Frost decided to give all of us living on Blighty a nasty reminder of just how cold winter really could be.

Weather forecasts had people all over the UK waking up apprehensively checking their gardens and driveways to see if they would be able to get to work and school or not. Some parts of the country were covered in a light snowfall and others woke to sleet and watery sunshine.

Temperatures plunged into minus figures, down to -13 overnight in Marham in the East on Wednesday morning and driving home at 4pm, the gauge in my car showed -5 degrees. Freezing fog and bitterly cold wind completed the winter-fest. The countryside looked a proper winter wonderland postcard with shiny, crystallised white frozen trees and heavy dumpings of snow on hedges and the roofs of houses.

A puffy, white snow carpet covered all the fields and a dog tumbled playfully in a thick pile of powdery snow while being walked by his duffle-coated, thermal gloved elderly gentleman owner, blowing out steamy breath as he trudged along, no doubt wishing for a steaming mug of tea.  The country seems to have been better prepared for this weather with less disruption to traffic and work than on the last two occasions when snow caused major problems all over the UK. Many more roads were gritted in time and travelling about seemed safer.

London saw an awful accident involving a helicopter crashing into a crane atop a building, resulting in loss of life and serious injury, directly attributable to the foggy weather.  Thursday has seen the temperatures staying low but inching up every so slightly, enough to let a little of the ice on the trees thaw. We have been warned by the weather forecasters to expect blizzard conditions and “significant” snowfall all over the country on Friday and also warned not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

A possible “SNOW DAY” all over the country?
